%3Cb%20class%3D%22title%22%3EVarpelev%20church%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0AVarpelev%20Church%20is%20located%20just%20east%20of%20the%20Tryggev%C3%A6lde%20river%20valley%20and%20at%20the%20highest%20point%20in%20the%20town.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0AThe%20church%20is%20one%20of%20the%20older%20chalk%20churches%20in%20Vall%C3%B8%20Municipality.%20It%20was%20built%20with%20a%20nave%20and%20choir%20in%20the%20Romanesque%20period%2C%20i.e.%20in%20the%20years%201080-1175%20and%2C%20somewhat%20unusually%2C%20the%20tower%20was%20added%20already%20at%20the%20end%20of%20this%20period.%20Around%201300%2C%20again%20at%20an%20early%20stage%2C%20a%20vault%20was%20added.%20In%20the%20late%20Gothic%20period%201475-1536%2C%20the%20extensions%20and%20gables%20were%20added.%20They%20are%20built%20of%20red%20monk%20stones%2C%20presumably%20recycled%20from%20the%20nearby%20burnt-down%20manor%20house.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0AA%20remarkable%20circumstance%20about%20the%20church%20is%20that%20not%20only%20has%20there%20been%20a%20reasonable%20assumption%20that%20the%20builders%20belonged%20to%20a%20specific%20family%2C%20the%20Ranes%20family%2C%20but%20also%20that%20names%20such%20as%20Herlug%2C%20Niels%20and%20Peter%20can%20be%20given%20to%20some%20of%20them.

%3Cb%20class%3D%22title%22%3EThe%20Tower%20House%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0AThe%20original%20access%20to%20the%20tower%20is%20not%20known.%20But%20for%20a%20time%2C%20a%20ladder%20was%20used%20through%20the%20southeast%20corner%20of%20the%20tower%20vault.%20On%20the%20north%20side%20of%20the%20tower%2C%20a%20staircase%20is%20now%20being%20built%20of%20monk%20stone%20with%20a%20round%20chalk%20stone%20spindle.%20A%20few%20steps%20above%20the%20door%20surround%20is%20a%20lump%20of%20flint%20stone.%20The%20single%20flint%20stone%20must%20have%20been%20placed%20on%20purpose.%20From%20ancient%20times%2C%20steel%20and%20flint%20were%20used%20to%20make%20fire.%20Superstition%20said%20that%20fire%20scared%20away%20trolls%20and%20witches.%20Therefore%2C%20steel%20or%20flint%20was%20often%20placed%20over%20the%20entrance%20door%20of%20the%20house%20as%20protection.%20Despite%20the%20fact%20that%20God%27s%20house%20was%20considered%20a%20safe%20place%2C%20people%20apparently%20still%20wanted%20to%20%22double-check%22%20themselves.%20For%20over%20500%20years%2C%20the%20stone%20sat%20undisturbed%20in%20its%20place.%20Whether%20it%20was%20able%20to%20protect%20against%20witchcraft%20is%20unknown%3B%20but%20a%20few%20years%20ago%2C%20part%20of%20the%20flint%20lump%20was%20broken%20off.%20It%20could%20not%20handle%20vandals.%20And%20yet%20%E2%80%93%20the%20rest%20of%20the%20stone%20is%20solid%20and%20well-built%2C%20and%20its%20new%20mussel-like%20fracture%20stands%20out%20black%20and%20extra%20clearly%20against%20the%20red%20stones.

%3Cb%20class%3D%22title%22%3EThe%20pillars%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0AIn%20the%2017th%20century%2C%20the%20tower%27s%20two%20limestone%20buttresses%20and%20two%20sets%20of%20half-roofs%20were%20probably%20built.%20The%20north%20side%20of%20the%20nave%20was%20given%20a%20similar%20but%20lower%20and%20heavier%20buttress.

%3Cb%20class%3D%22title%22%3EQueen%20Charlotte%20Amalie%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0AIn%201706%2C%20Queen%20Charlotte%20Amalie%20carried%20out%20a%20major%20renovation%20of%20the%20church.%20During%20this%20time%2C%20the%20entire%20church%20was%20almost%20overdecorated%2C%20but%20today%20only%20the%20queen%27s%20monogram%20can%20be%20seen%20adorned%20with%20a%20crown%2C%20the%20year%20and%20lions.

%3Cb%20class%3D%22title%22%3EThe%20tower%20room%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0A1906%2C%20the%20ministry%27s%20permission%20is%20awaited%20to%20break%20through%20the%20west%20wall%20of%20the%20tower%20in%20order%20to%20set%20up%20a%20mortuary%20chapel%20in%20the%20tower%20room.%20The%20inspection%20report%20states%20in%201913%20that%20the%20tower%20room%20has%20now%20been%20accessed%20from%20the%20outside%2C%20has%20been%20separated%20from%20the%20nave%20by%20a%20wall%20and%20has%20been%20set%20up%20as%20a%20chapel.%20At%20the%20same%20time%2C%20the%20doors%20to%20the%20porch%20and%20church%20have%20been%20renewed.%20However%2C%20during%20the%20restoration%20of%20the%20church%20in%201923%2C%20the%20chapel%20was%20moved%20to%20the%20porch%2C%20and%20new%20access%20to%20the%20church%20will%20be%20through%20the%20tower%20room.%20The%20tower%27s%20entrance%20and%20staircase%20were%20most%20recently%20renovated%20in%201987.

%3Cb%20class%3D%22title%22%3EInaugural%20cross%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0AHere%20is%20the%20oldest%20decoration%20of%20the%20church%2C%20which%20has%20been%20there%20%22always%22%2C%20i.e.%20from%20the%20construction%20of%20the%20church%3A%20a%20red%20dedication%20cross.%20The%20people%20of%20the%20National%20Museum%20write%3A%20%22In%20the%20original%20part%20of%20the%20church%2C%204%20Romanesque%20dedication%20crosses%20were%20found%2C%20painted%20in%20red%20after%20sketching%20by%20scoring%20with%20a%20compass%20in%20the%20fresh%20plaster%2C%20and%20thus%20painted%20immediately%20after%20the%20construction%20of%20the%20church%20...%20The%20cross%20on%20the%20north%20wall%20of%20the%20church%20was%20allowed%20to%20stand%20in%20the%20church%2C%20as%20it%20was%20extremely%20well%20preserved%20...%20There%20have%20probably%20been%20several%20dedication%20crosses%20from%20this%20period%20in%20the%20church%2C%20but%20these%20must%20have%20been%20lost%20in%20connection%20with%20the%20expansion%20of%20windows%20and%20other%20interventions%20in%20the%20building.%20On%20the%20west%20side%20of%20the%20triumphal%20wall%2C%20a%20few%20remains%20of%20a%20decoration%20were%20found%2C%20which%20probably%20also%20dates%20from%20this%20period%2C%20as%20it%20was%20painted%20before%20the%20construction%20of%20the%20vaults.%20These%20traces%20of%20paint%20were%20covered%20up%20again%22.

%3Cb%20class%3D%22title%22%3EDecoration%20in%20the%20west%20vault%20of%20the%20choir%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0ADuring%20the%20whitewashing%20of%20the%20church%20in%201956%2C%20traces%20of%20colored%20lime%20plaster%20were%20discovered.%20The%20ornaments%20found%20are%20from%20the%20end%20of%20the%2013th%20century%2C%20i.e.%20they%20were%20painted%20when%20the%20church%20was%20vaulted.%20Very%20beautiful%20ornaments%20are%20placed%20at%20the%20top%20of%20the%20four%20capstones%20of%20the%20vault%20%28no.%202%29.%20The%20heart%20shape%20is%20the%20same%20for%20all%20of%20them%2C%20while%20the%20shape%20of%20the%20tendrils%20and%20foliage%20varies.%20On%20the%20ribs%20towards%20the%20center%20of%20the%20vault%20and%20on%20round%20bars%20along%20the%20arches%2C%20red%20and%20white%20fields%20are%20painted%20%28no.%203%29%2C%20while%20the%20arches%20are%20decorated%20with%20a%20gray%20block%20painting%2C%20where%20the%20joints%20are%20painted%20white%20delimited%20by%20two%20red%20lines%20%28no.%204%29.%20In%20the%20corners%2C%20the%20caps%20and%20ribs%20end%20in%20small%20consoles%20that%20are%20marbled%20%28no.%205%29.%20From%20the%20top%20of%20the%20arches%2C%20a%20single%20stem%20with%20many%20leaves%20grows%20about%201%20m%20up%20the%20caps.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0AThe%20decoration%20has%20so%20many%20features%20in%20common%20with%20a%20similar%20decoration%20in%20Teestrup%20Church%20that%20it%20is%20clearly%20believed%20to%20have%20been%20made%20by%20the%20same%20workshop.%20What%20is%20only%20found%20in%20Varpelev%2C%20however%2C%20is%20the%20remarkable%20inscription.%20In%20the%20east%20cape%2C%20on%20both%20sides%20of%20the%20stem%20is%20painted%3A%20Magist%20Nicolaus%20%28no.%206%29.%20Nothing%20is%20known%20about%20this%20learned%20man.%20He%20is%20presumably%20of%20the%20Ranes%20family%20and%20should%20possibly%20be%20remembered%20because%20he%20paid%20for%20the%20vaults.%20In%20terms%20of%20time%2C%20he%20could%20then%20be%20the%20same%20Mr.%20Niels%20Herlugsen%2C%20whose%20gravestone%20is%20in%20the%20church.%20But%20these%20are%20only%20guesses.%20The%20approx.%2015%20cm%20high%2C%20slender%20letters%20were%20first%20scratched%20into%20the%20plaster%20and%20then%20painted%20with%20black%20paint.%20Remains%20of%20similar%20decoration%20were%20found%20in%20the%20nave%2C%20but%20these%20are%20covered%20up.

%3Cb%20class%3D%22title%22%3EThe%20hidden%20%22Rider%20graffiti%22%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3EAbove%20the%20crucifix%20was%20a%20fresco%20of%20a%20horseman%2C%20painted%20directly%20on%20the%20vault%27s%20original%20plaster%20layer%2C%20i.e.%20when%20the%20choir%20was%20extended%20in%20the%20years%201475-1536.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0A%22The%20equestrian%20image%20is%20not%20very%20large%2C%20probably%20barely%2040%20x%2030%20cm%20and%20without%20any%20framing.%20On%20the%20galloping%20horse%2C%20which%20is%20roughly%20but%20quite%20lifelike%20painted%2C%20sits%20a%20tall%20rider%20with%20a%20sword%20at%20his%20side.%20An%20amusing%20feature%20is%20that%20the%20figure%20for%20the%20painting%20is%20scratched%20into%20the%20plaster%20in%20an%20extremely%20unhelpful%20way.%20Unlike%20the%20painted%20image%2C%20where%20the%20rider%27s%20arms%20are%20not%20visible%2C%20in%20the%20scratch%20he%20is%20depicted%20aiming%20with%20a%20crossbow.%20This%20detail%20seems%20never%20to%20have%20been%20painted.%22%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20The%20entire%20vault%20was%20uncovered%2C%20but%20there%20was%20no%20trace%20of%20any%20other%20decoration%20than%20this%20rather%20gratuitously%20placed%20rider.%20Perhaps%20the%20rider%20was%20supposed%20to%20represent%20St.%20George%20%28and%20the%20dragon%29%2C%20but%20one%20can%20also%20get%20the%20idea%20that%20it%20was%20just%20a%20%22graffiti%22%20of%20the%20time%2C%20which%20the%20painter%20immediately%20whitewashed%20over.%20Perhaps%20it%20was%20also%20amusing%20to%20him%20that%20he%20alone%20knew%20what%20the%20whitewash%20hid.%20Today%2C%20the%20news%20is%20known%2C%20but%20the%20rider%20is%20still%20hidden%20after%20being%20photographed%2C%20as%20he%20has%20been%20for%20about%20500%20years.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0A

%3Cb%20class%3D%22title%22%3EThe%20decoration%20behind%20the%20Crucifix%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0AOn%20the%20east%20wall%20behind%20the%20crucifix%20is%20a%20fresco%20of%20flower%20vines.%20It%20was%20executed%20in%201923-1925%2C%20and%20the%20execution%20was%20described%20in%201988%3A%20%22It%20is%20clear%20that%20the%20painting%20took%20into%20account%20the%20placement%20of%20the%20cross%2C%20Mary%20and%20John.%20However%2C%20from%20the%20underlying%20traces%20of%20color%2C%20it%20could%20be%20determined%20that%20even%20though%20the%20decoration%20was%20executed%20in%20this%20century%2C%20it%20was%20designed%20on%20the%20basis%20of%20an%20older%2C%20probably%20late%20Gothic%20painting%22.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0AIn%201964%2C%20the%20then%20priest%20suggested%20that%20the%20wall%20behind%20the%20altar%20be%20whitewashed%2C%20as%20the%20decorations%20were%20not%20the%20original%20ones%2C%20but%20his%20suggestion%20did%20not%20resonate.

%3Cb%20class%3D%22title%22%3EThe%20altar%20decoration%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0Aer%20is%20a%20choir%20arch%20crucifix%20from%20the%20time%20just%20after%201500.%20In%20the%20Middle%20Ages%2C%20N%C3%A6stved%20was%20the%20center%20of%20a%20large%20artistic%20activity%20with%20many%20talented%20artists.%20One%20of%20these%20is%20called%20Store%20Fugledemesteren%20or%20N%C3%A6stvedmesteren%20after%20a%20crucifix%20he%20had%20made%20in%20the%20church%20in%20Store%20Fuglede%20and%20another%20he%20made%20for%20Skt.%20Mortens%20Church%20in%20N%C3%A6stved.%20In%20addition%20to%20these%20two%2C%20he%20made%20a%20number%20of%20smaller%20crucifixes%20in%20the%20years%20just%20after%201500%2C%20and%20one%20of%20these%20was%20for%20Vrapelev%20Church.%20Characteristic%20of%20his%20style%20is%20that%20the%20figure%20of%20Christ%20has%20a%20long%20figure%20with%20a%20large%20head%20with%20a%20seriously%20suffering%20look.%20The%20hair%20falls%20in%20two%20rope-like%20corkscrew%20curls%20down%20each%20side%20of%20the%20face.%20The%20loincloth%20sits%20tight%20with%20the%20folds%20across.%20The%20figure%20hangs%20low%20in%20the%20arms%20with%20outstretched%20feet.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0AThe%20perception%20of%20Jesus%20and%20his%20death%20on%20the%20cross%20changes%20over%20time%2C%20and%20this%20is%20clearly%20reflected%20in%20the%20crucifixes%20from%20the%20different%20periods.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0AIn%20the%20beginning%2C%20Christ%20is%20depicted%20as%20a%20king%3A%20He%20has%20proudly%20raised%20his%20head%20with%20a%20royal%20crown%20and%20stands%20with%20both%20feet%20firmly%20planted%20on%20the%20cross.%20He%20is%20clearly%20the%20ruler%20who%20has%20power%20and%20demands%20obedience.%20In%20the%2013th%20century%2C%20it%20is%20the%20crucified%20savior%20who%20is%20depicted%3A%20Jesus%20hangs%20on%20the%20cross%2C%20his%20head%20is%20bowed%20and%20covered%20with%20a%20crown%20of%20thorns.%20His%20feet%20are%20placed%20on%20top%20of%20each%20other%20and%20a%20nail%20is%20driven%20through.%20Here%20we%20see%20the%20savior%20who%2C%20through%20his%20own%20suffering%20and%20death%2C%20has%20redeemed%20people%20from%20their%20sins.%20The%20cross%20itself%20begins%20to%20take%20on%20an%20independent%20character%3B%20it%20is%20not%20just%20a%20cross%2C%20but%20also%20a%20tree%20of%20life%2C%20sometimes%20directly%20decorated%20with%20leaves%20and%20gradually%20often%20adorned%20with%20images%20of%20the%20four%20evangelists%20who%20passed%20on%20Jesus%27%20words%20and%20thereby%20continued%20life.

%3Cb%20class%3D%22title%22%3EThe%20side%20characters%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%22Both%20have%20broad%2C%20flat%20heads...%20John%20turns%20his%20curled%20head%20en%20face%2C%20but%20raises%20his%20all-too-small%20arms%20upwards%20to%20the%20right%20towards%20the%20Savior...%20Mary%2C%20whose%20face%20is%20almost%20spherical%2C%20grasps%20a%20flap%20of%20the%20headscarf%20with%20her%20right%20hand...%20The%20work%20is%20so%20poor%20that%2C%20despite%20the%20similarity%2C%20it%20can%20hardly%20be%20attributed%20to%20the%20same%20sculptor%20as%20the%20crucifix%20itself.%22

%3Cb%20class%3D%22title%22%3EThe%20early%20altarpiece%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0AThe%20previous%20altarpiece%20signed%20Aug.%20Thomsen%20was%20hung%20in%20the%20tower%20room%2C%20and%20the%20accompanying%2C%20very%20large%20wooden%20frame%20was%20placed%20in%20the%20church%20around%20the%20entrance%20door.

%3Cb%20class%3D%22title%22%3EThe%20Altars%20and%20the%20Altar%20Silver%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3EThe%20altar%20chalice%20is%20made%20of%20gilded%20silver%2C%20simple%20and%20smooth%20with%20a%20pear-shaped%20knob%20and%20a%20circular%20base.%20Along%20the%20edge%20of%20the%20chalice%20is%20engraved%3A%20%22In%20the%20name%20of%20Jesus%20this%20chalice%20and%20dish%20are%20given%20to%20the%20Warpel%C3%B8f%20Church%20by%20those%20who%20sincerely%20fear%20God%20and%20hope%20for%20his%20kingdom%201681%22.%20On%20the%20base%20is%20engraved%20an%20HHS%20between%20palm%20branches.%20The%20contemporary%20disc%20has%20a%20clumsily%20engraved%20circular%20cross.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0AThe%20altar%20candles%20are%20probably%20from%20around%201550%2C%20although%20their%20shape%20is%20older.%20The%20shaft%20has%20three%20heavy%20cylinder%20rings.%20The%20feet%20are%20sawn%20off.%20It%20is%20known%20that%20the%20candles%20were%20purchased%20in%201723-33%20from%20Str%C3%B8%20Church%20north%20of%20Slangerup%2C%20and%20in%20that%20connection%20it%20was%20stated%20that%20they%20weighed%2010%20kg.

%3Cb%20class%3D%22title%22%3EThe%20baptismal%20font%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0AThe%20baptismal%20font%20from%20the%2012th-13th%20centuries%20made%20of%20granite%20belongs%20to%20a%20group%20of%2080%20fonts%20that%20are%20not%20decorated%2C%20which%20are%20collectively%20called%20the%20Roskilde%20type%2C%20and%20of%20which%20the%20font%20in%20Str%C3%B8by%20is%20a%20variant.%20Due%20to%20the%20wide%20distribution%2C%20there%20have%20probably%20been%20local%20workshops%2C%20but%20the%20main%20workshop%20of%20the%20group%20must%20have%20been%20located%20in%20the%20diocese%20itself.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0AAt%20the%20top%2C%20the%20basin%20is%20always%20finished%20with%20a%20strong%20rope-twisted%20round%20bar%2C%20which%20usually%20sits%20a%20few%20cm%20below%20the%20rim%2C%20but%20sometimes%2C%20as%20in%20Varpelev%2C%20goes%20up%20to%20the%20rim.%20The%20transition%20between%20basin%20and%20foot%20is%20softened%20with%20a%20strong%20bead%2C%20which%20may%20be%20carved%20in%20one%20piece%20with%20the%20foot%20or%2C%20as%20in%20the%20case%20of%20Varpelev%2C%20with%20the%20basin.%20The%20foot%20of%20this%20type%20of%20fountain%20is%20a%20truncated%20cone%2C%20in%20Varpelev%20the%20foot%20is%20made%20of%20masonry%20and%20may%20not%20be%20the%20original%20one.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0AOf%20course%20there%20are%20small%20variations%20within%20the%20Roskilde%20group%2C%20both%20in%20appearance%20and%20quality%2C%20but%20for%20example%20the%20font%20in%20Greve%20and%20Varpelev%20are%20very%20similar%20to%20each%20other.%20Coinciding%20with%20the%2080%20fonts%2C%20it%20is%20said%20that%20they%20may%20differ%20in%20quality%2C%20but%20when%20they%20are%20at%20their%20best%20%28and%20this%20includes%20the%20font%20in%20Greve%29%2C%20they%20have%20succeeded%3A%20%22...to%20create%20not%20only%20a%20real%2C%20sometimes%20excellently%20executed%20piece%20of%20craftsmanship%2C%20but%20also%20a%20beautiful%20and%20dignified%20font%20type%20with%20good%20relationships%20between%20the%20individual%20joints%2C%20basin%2C%20bead%20and%20foot%2C%20and%20with%20a%20firm%20and%20closed%20stance%2C%20which%20is%20precisely%20emphasized%20by%20their%20complete%20lack%20of%20decorative%20ornamentation%22.%20The%20baptismal%20font%20is%20South%20German%20%22Nuremberg%20work%22%20of%20brass%2C%20driven%20by%20form.%20At%20the%20bottom%20the%20Annunciation%20of%20Mary%20and%20around%20it%20dogs%20and%20deer.%20On%20the%20rim%20the%20same%20hunting%20motif.%20Factory%20stamp%20RS.

%3Cb%20class%3D%22title%22%3EThe%20tombstone%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20The%20%0Aon%20the%20north%20wall%20of%20the%20choir%20has%20given%20rise%20to%20both%20legend%20and%20much%20speculation%20over%20the%20years.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0AThe%20purpose%20of%20the%20tombstones%20in%20the%20cemeteries%20and%20in%20the%20churches%20was%20primarily%20to%20announce%20by%20name%20that%20a%20Christian%20rested%20there.%20It%20was%20not%20until%20the%20beginning%20of%20the%2014th%20century%20that%20the%20tombstones%20began%20to%20be%20dated%20and%20provided%20with%20the%20man%27s%20coat%20of%20arms%2C%20while%20women%20had%20to%20wait%20another%20100%20years%20before%20their%20coats%20of%20arms%20were%20also%20included.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0AThe%20stone%20in%20Varpelev%20dates%20from%20around%201300%2C%20but%20unfortunately%20it%20is%20neither%20dated%20nor%20has%20a%20coat%20of%20arms.%20A%20marginal%20inscription%20says%20in%20not%20entirely%20flawless%20Latin%3A%20%22In%20the%20name%20of%20the%20Father%20and%20the%20Son%20and%20the%20Holy%20Spirit.%20Here%20rests%20Mr.%20Herlug%2C%20here%20rests%20Mr.%20Niels%2C%20former%20chamberlain%20and%20his%20wife%20Cecilie%22%20on%20the%20vertical%20middle%20band%20continues%3A%20%22Mr.%20Peder%2C%20his%20son%2C%20Mrs.%20Kathelug%22.%20The%20family%20gravesite%20contains%20a%20father%2C%20Herlug%20and%20his%20two%20sons%20with%20spouses%3A%20Niels%20and%20Peder%20Herlugsen.%20These%20men%20are%20knights%20%28Mr.%20indicates%20that%20one%20has%20been%20knighted%29%2C%20are%20from%20the%20Ranes%20family%20and%20have%20been%20owners%20of%20the%20church.%20Probably%20one%20or%20more%20of%20them%20have%20directly%20been%20the%20builder%20of%20parts%20of%20the%20church.%20In%20addition%20to%20the%20family%20relationship%20between%20the%20people%2C%20it%20is%20stated%20that%20Niels%20has%20been%20the%20king%27s%20chamberlain%2C%20which%20is%20treasurer.%20The%20stone%20depicts%20a%20man%20and%20a%20woman%20raising%20their%20hands%20in%20prayer.%20Presumably%20a%20married%20couple%2C%20where%20her%20headscarf%2C%20the%20widow%27s%20veil%2C%20in%20that%20case%20indicates%20that%20she%20outlives%20him.%20Perhaps%20these%20are%20the%20Mr.%20Peder%20and%20Mrs.%20Kathelug%20mentioned%20on%20the%20middle%20band.%20But%20it%20could%20just%20as%20well%20be%20the%20second%20couple%20with%20the%20apparently%20most%20distinguished%20one%2C%20Mr.%20Niels.%20It%20is%20known%20about%20Cecilie%20that%20she%20outlived%20her%20husband.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0AThe%20stone%20is%20the%20only%20one%20preserved%20of%20three%20tombstones%20of%20the%20same%20persons.%20In%20a%20record%20from%201776%20and%20repeated%20in%201798%2C%20two%20other%20tombstones%20in%20the%20choir%20are%20also%20mentioned.%20%22One%20with%20this%20inscription%3A%20Domi-nus%20Nicolaus%20qvondam%20Camerarius%20and%20Domina%20C%C3%A6cilia%20uxor%20ejus%20in%20nomine%20P.%20et%20F.%20et%20Spir.%20Sancti%20Amen.%20The%20other%20with%20this%20inscription%3A%20Hic%20jacet%20D.%20Herlo-fus.%20Hic%20jacet%20D.%20Petrus%20filius%20fuus%20Domina%20...%22%20Translated%20by%3A%20%22Mr.%20Niels%20once%2F%20former%20chamberlain%20and%20Mrs.%20Cecilie%2C%20his%20wife%2C%20in%20the%20name%20of%20the%20Father%2C%20the%20Son%20and%20the%20Holy%20Spirit.%20Amen%22.%20The%20other%20thus%3A%20%22Here%20lies%20%28actually%20thrown%29%20Mr.%20Herlug.%20Here%20lies%20Mr.%20Peter%20his%20son%20Mrs.%20...%22.%20These%20two%20stones%20have%20disappeared.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0AThe%20one%20that%20remains%2C%20which%20is%20now%20in%20the%20north%20wall%2C%20was%20in%20the%20middle%20aisle%20of%20the%20choir%2C%20partly%20hidden%20by%20the%20rows%20of%20chairs.%20The%20stone%20gave%20rise%20to%20a%20story%20that%20a%20virgin%20who%20had%20built%20the%20church%20rested%20here.%20In%201758%2C%20the%20stone%20was%20exposed%2C%20so%20that%20both%20figures%20came%20to%20light.%20This%20is%20probably%20the%20reason%20why%20the%20priest%20in%20the%20same%20year%20now%20reports%20that%20the%20church%20is%20supposedly%20built%20by%20two%20rich%20virgins.%20He%20writes%3A%20%22On%20the%20church%20floor%20up%20by%20the%20choir%20lies%20a%20tombstone%2C%20on%20which%20stands%20the%20carved%20two%20of%20the%20Virgin%20Marys%20in%20full%20Corpus.%20One%20of%20the%20Virgin%20Marys%20stands%20in%20the%20guise%20of%20a%20virgin%2C%20with%20a%20wreath%20around%20her%20head%2C%20but%20the%20other%20has%20a%20long%20widow%27s%20veil.%20The%20farmers%20say%20that%20under%20that%20stone%20lie%20the%20two%20who%20built%20the%20church%20and%20lived%20in%20the%20farm%20next%20to%20the%20church.%22%20The%20priest%20ends%20his%20report%20by%20mentioning%20the%20inscription%2C%20whose%20letters%20he%20assumes%20are%20runic%20and%20therefore%20unknown%20to%20him%2C%20but%20nevertheless%20reveal%20the%20age%20of%20the%20church.%20It%20may%20be%20surprising%20that%20the%20priest%20cannot%20recognize%20some%20of%20the%20Latin%20words%2C%20which%20must%20be%20familiar%20to%20him.%20Once%20again%2C%20a%20legend%20shows%20that%20it%20has%20a%20kernel%20of%20truth%20mixed%20with%20a%20lot%20of%20fabrication.%20It%20is%20often%20difficult%20to%20know%20what%20to%20trust.%20In%20this%20case%2C%20the%20excavations%20of%20K%C3%B8ge%20Museum%20show%20that%20the%20builders%20did%20indeed%20live%20in%20the%20nearby%20farm.%20On%20the%20other%20hand%2C%20the%20man%27s%20costume%20has%20been%20misinterpreted%20as%20a%20woman%27s%20costume%2C%20hence%20the%20two%20virgins.%20The%20man%20from%20the%20National%20Museum%20writes%20about%20the%20tombstone%20in%201916%2C%20with%20almost%20indignation%20it%20seems%3A%20%22Letters%20and%20contours%20are%20drawn%20-%20and%20not%20always%20successfully%20supplemented%20-%20with%20black%20paint.%20They%20have%20not%20only%20painted%20the%20missing%20parts%20of%20the%20man%27s%20face%2C%20but%20also%20wanted%20to%20decorate%20him%20with%20a%20headdress%21%22

%3Cb%20class%3D%22title%22%3EThe%20desk%20chair%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3EThe%20oak%20altarpiece%20is%20very%20simple%2C%20probably%20from%20the%2016th%20century%2C%20with%20some%20sewn-on%2C%20somewhat%20clumsily%20cut%20edges%20as%20decoration.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0AThe%20concept%20of%20deacon%20as%20such%20dates%20back%20to%20the%20Catholic%20era%20and%20was%20continued%20in%20the%20church%20after%20the%20Reformation%20in%201536.%20In%20Christian%20the%20Fifth%27s%20Danish%20law%20in%201683%20it%20is%20stated%20that%20a%20permanent%20deacon%20should%20be%20appointed%20in%20every%20pastorate%2C%20and%20it%20is%20emphasized%20that%20he%20must%20be%20a%20student.%20According%20to%20a%20royal%20charter%20in%201736%2C%20schoolmasters%20who%20had%20served%20at%20the%20royal%20schools%20were%20to%20be%20preferred.%20Gradually%2C%20teachers%20contested%20a%20number%20of%20deacon%20positions%2C%20and%20the%20idea%20emerged%20that%20the%20special%20deacon%20positions%20could%20be%20abolished.%20In%20the%201790s%2C%20the%20deacon%20positions%20began%20to%20be%20abolished.%20Their%20business%20was%20then%20transferred%20to%20the%20schoolmasters%20in%20the%20church%20towns.%20The%20teacher%20who%20was%20appointed%20as%20a%20church%20singer%20was%20paid%20specifically%20for%20this.%20In%20the%20parishes%20of%20Str%C3%B8by%20and%20Varpelev%2C%20Laurids%20Rebech%20became%20a%20clerk%20at%20the%20age%20of%2044%20in%201777.%2020%20years%20later%2C%20when%20he%20was%20sick%20and%20old%2C%20he%20hired%20student%20Otto%20Lang%20as%20an%20assistant%20in%201797.%20But%20the%20clerk%20died%20the%20following%20year.%20It%20was%20then%20decided%20to%20abolish%20the%20office%20of%20clerk%20with%20effect%20from%201799.%20From%20then%20on%2C%20and%20until%20his%20death%20in%201814%2C%20Otto%20Lang%20was%20named%20both%20schoolmaster%20and%20church%20singer.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0ASince%20the%20abolition%20of%20the%20office%20of%20deacon%2C%20the%20chair%20has%20belonged%20to%20the%20church%20singer%2C%20although%20it%20retained%20its%20original%20name%20in%20popular%20speech%20and%20its%20place%20in%20the%20church%20for%20almost%20200%20years.

%3Cb%20class%3D%22title%22%3EOle%20Christensen%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0AThe%20gravestone%20is%20%22a%20grey-black%20granite%20stone%2C%20a%20monument%20on%20a%20pedestal%2C%20carved%20with%20an%20oval%20polished%20writing%20surface%20and%20with%20a%20Latin%20cross%20in%20relief%22.%20The%20stone%20reads%3A%20Farmer%20Ole%20Christensen%27s%20Grave%201918.%20Behind%20the%20short%20inscription%20and%20the%20man%27s%20name%2C%20modestly%20hides%20his%2014-year-old%20wife%2C%20Anne%20Sofie%20Hansen%2C%20and%20a%20still%20existing%20bequest.%20The%20title%20to%20the%20grave%20expired%20in%201962%2C%20but%20the%20parish%20council%20decided%20at%20that%20time%20to%20renew%20the%20title%20and%20maintain%20it%20at%20the%20church%27s%20expense.

%3Cb%20class%3D%22title%22%3EThe%20bells%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0AWith%20a%20bell%20cast%20in%201613%2C%20Varpelev%20Church%20has%20the%20oldest%20bell%20among%20the%208%20churches%20located%20in%20Vall%C3%B8%20Municipality.%20It%20has%20a%20diameter%20of%2083%20cm.%20On%20the%20bell%20body%20is%20a%20frieze%20with%20flowers%20and%20an%20inscription%20in%20Latin%3A%20%22Si%20Deus%20pro%20nobis%20qvis%20contra%20nos%20Borchardt%20Gelgeisser%20me%20fecit%20anno%201613%22%2C%20which%20can%20be%20translated%20as%3A%20%22If%20God%20is%20for%20us%2C%20who%20is%20against%20us.%20Borchardt%20Gelgeisser%20cast%20me%20in%201613%22.%20The%20bell-caster%2C%20whose%20full%20name%20was%20Borchard%20Jensen%20Queillichmeyer%2C%20was%20a%20royal%20piece-molder%20in%20Copenhagen%20from%201588%20to%201613.%20In%201594%20he%20cast%20a%20bell%20for%20St.%20T%C3%A5rnby%2C%20which%20was%20later%20recast.%20Str%C3%B8by%20Church%20also%20received%20a%20bell%20from%20his%20workshop%20in%201594%2C%20but%20it%20is%20also%20gone%2C%20and%20only%20Varpelev%27s%20bell%20remains.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0AThe%20smaller%20bell%20with%20a%20diameter%20of%2067%20cm%20has%20Christian%20the%20Sixth%27s%20crowned%20mirror%20monogram%20surrounded%20by%20laurel%20branches%20on%20the%20bell%20body.%20Between%20rows%20of%20acanthus%20leaves%20facing%20up%20and%20down%20it%20says%3A%20%22Soli%20Deo%20gloria%20me%20fecit%20Johan%20Bartold%20Holtzmann%20Hafniae%20Anno%201742%22%2C%20i.e.%20%22Johan%20Bartold%20Holtzmann%20cast%20me%20Copenhagen%20in%20the%20year%201742.%20God%20alone%20the%20glory%22.%20This%20bell-caster%20was%20also%20a%20royal%20piece-caster.%20He%20worked%20in%20the%20years%201727-1757.%20Himling%C3%B8je%20and%20Str%C3%B8by%20Church%20had%20previously%20received%20bells%20from%20this%20workshop.%20Now%20it%20was%20Varpelev%27s%20turn%2C%20and%20later%20Enderslev%20Church%20also%20received%20bells%20from%20him.%20For%20just%20over%20200%20years%2C%20Varpelev%27s%20two%20bells%20have%20rung%20together%20over%20Varpelev%20parish%2C%20although%20after%201975%20with%20automatic%20ringing.
