%3Cb%3EExplanation%20of%20inscription%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Ch3%3EThe%20tombstone%20on%20the%20north%20wall%20of%20the%20choir%20has%20given%20rise%20to%20both%20legends%20and%20much%20speculation%20over%20the%20years.%3C%2Fh3%3E%0D%0A%0D%0A%3Cp%3EThe%20stone%20in%20Varpelev%20dates%20from%20around%201300%2C%20but%20unfortunately%20it%20is%20neither%20dated%20nor%20has%20noble%20arms.%20A%20marginal%20inscription%20says%20in%20not%20entirely%20flawless%20Latin%3A%20%22In%20the%20name%20of%20the%20Father%20and%20of%20the%20Son%20and%20of%20the%20Holy%20Spirit.%22%20Here%20rests%20Mr.%20Herlug%2C%20here%20rests%20Mr.%20Niels%20former%20chamberlain%20and%20his%20wife%20Cecilie%27%20on%20the%20vertical%20middle%20band%20continues%3A%20%27Mr.%20Peder%2C%20his%20son%2C%20Mrs%20Kathelug%27.%20The%20family%20burial%20site%20therefore%20contains%20a%20father%2C%20Herlug%2C%20and%20his%20two%20sons%20and%20their%20spouses%3A%20Niels%20and%20Peder%20Herlugsen.%20These%20men%20are%20knights%2C%20%28Mr.%20indicates%20that%20one%20has%20been%20knighted%29%2C%20are%20of%20the%20Ranes%20family%20and%20have%20owned%20the%20church.%20It%20is%20likely%20that%20one%20or%20more%20of%20them%20directly%20built%20parts%20of%20the%20church.%20In%20addition%20to%20the%20family%20relationship%20between%20the%20persons%2C%20it%20is%20stated%20that%20Niels%20has%20been%20the%20king%27s%20chamberlain%2C%20which%20is%20treasurer.%20The%20stone%20depicts%20a%20man%20and%20a%20woman%20raising%20their%20hands%20in%20prayer.%20Presumably%20a%20married%20couple%2C%20in%20which%20case%20her%20headdress%2C%20the%20widow%27s%20veil%2C%20indicates%20that%20she%20survives%20him.%20Perhaps%20it%20is%20Mr.%20Peder%20and%20Mrs.%20Kathelug%20mentioned%20in%20the%20middle%20band.%20But%20it%20could%20just%20as%20well%20be%20the%20other%20couple%20with%20the%20apparently%20most%20distinguished%20one%2C%20Mr.%20Niels.%20Cecilie%20is%20known%20to%20have%20outlived%20her%20husband.%3C%2Fp%3E%0D%0A%0D%0A%3Cp%3EThe%20stone%20is%20the%20only%20surviving%20one%20of%20three%20gravestones%20for%20the%20same%20persons.%20In%20a%20record%20from%201776%20and%20repeated%20in%201798%2C%20two%20other%20tombstones%20in%20the%20choir%20are%20also%20mentioned.%20%22The%20one%20with%20this%20inscription%3A%20Dominus%20Nicolaus%20qvondam%20Camerarius%20and%20Domina%20C%C3%A6cilia%20uxor%20ejus%20in%20nomine%20P.%20et%20F.%20et%20Spir.%20Holy%20Amen.%20The%20other%20with%20this%20inscription%3A%20Hic%20jacet%20D.%20Herlo-fus.%20Hic%20jacet%20D.%20Petrus%20filius%20fuus%20Domina%20...%27%20Translated%20by%3A%20%27Mr.%20Niels%20once%2Fformer%20chamberlain%20and%20Mrs%20Cecilie%2C%20his%20wife%2C%20in%20the%20name%20of%20the%20Father%2C%20the%20Son%20and%20the%20Holy%20Spirit.%20Amen%27.%20The%20other%20thus%3A%20%22Here%20rests%20%28actually%20thrown%20away%29%20Mr.%20Herlug.%20Here%20rests%20Mr.%20Peter%20his%20son%20Mrs%20...%C2%AB.%20These%20two%20stones%20have%20disappeared.%3C%2Fp%3E%0D%0A%0D%0A%3Cp%3EThe%20remaining%20one%2C%20which%20now%20sits%20in%20the%20north%20wall%2C%20was%20in%20the%20aisle%20of%20the%20choir%2C%20partially%20hidden%20by%20the%20rows%20of%20chairs.%20The%20stone%20gave%20rise%20to%20a%20story%20that%20under%20it%20rested%20a%20virgin%20who%20had%20built%20the%20church.%20In%201758%2C%20the%20stone%20was%20exposed%2C%20so%20that%20both%20figures%20came%20into%20view.%20This%20is%20probably%20the%20reason%20why%20the%20priest%20now%20reports%20that%20the%20church%20was%20supposedly%20built%20by%20two%20rich%20virgins%20in%20the%20same%20year.%20He%20writes%3A%20%22On%20the%20church%20floor%20up%20by%20the%20chancel%20is%20a%20memorial%20stone%2C%20on%20which%20stands%20the%20carved%202nd%20Lady%20Hours%20in%20full%20Corpus.%20One%20of%20the%20lady-timers%20is%20standing%20in%20a%20maiden%27s%20dress%2C%20with%20a%20wreath%20on%20her%20head%2C%20but%20the%20other%20has%20a%20long%20widow%27s%20veil.%20The%20farmers%20say%20that%20under%20that%20stone%20lie%20the%202nd%20who%20built%20the%20church%20and%20lived%20in%20the%20farm%20next%20to%20the%20church.%27%20The%20priest%20ends%20his%20report%20by%20mentioning%20the%20inscription%2C%20the%20letters%20of%20which%20he%20suspects%20are%20runic%20and%20therefore%20unknown%20to%20him%2C%20but%20nevertheless%20reveal%20the%20church%27s%20antiquity.%20It%20is%20surprising%20that%20the%20priest%20cannot%20recognize%20some%20of%20the%20Latin%20words%2C%20which%20must%20be%20familiar%20to%20him.%20Once%20again%20a%20legend%20proves%20to%20have%20a%20kernel%20of%20truth%20mixed%20with%20a%20lot%20of%20fabrication.%20More%20often%20than%20not%2C%20it%27s%20hard%20to%20know%20what%20to%20trust.%20In%20this%20case%2C%20K%C3%B8ge%20Museum%27s%20excavations%20show%20that%20the%20builders%20actually%20lived%20in%20the%20nearby%20farm.%20On%20the%20other%20hand%2C%20the%20man%27s%20suit%20has%20been%20mistakenly%20interpreted%20as%20a%20woman%27s%20suit%2C%20hence%20the%20two%20virgins.%20The%20National%20Museum%27s%20man%20writes%20about%20the%20gravestone%20in%201916%2C%20almost%20with%20indignation%2C%20it%20seems%3A%20%22Letters%20and%20contours%20are%20drawn%20-%20and%20not%20always%20equally%20fortunately%20supplemented%20-%20with%20black%20colour.%20They%20have%20not%20only%20painted%20the%20missing%20parts%20of%20the%20man%27s%20face%2C%20but%20also%20wanted%20to%20decorate%20him%20with%20a%20headdress%21%27%3C%2Fp%3E

%3Cb%3EChurch%20history%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3EIn%20the%2013th%20century%2C%20the%20original%20chapel%20was%20rebuilt%20into%20a%20church%20of%20limestone%20blocks%20consisting%20of%20the%20present%20nave%2C%20which%20was%20expanded%20over%20the%20following%20centuries%20with%20a%20choir%2C%20porch%20and%20sacristy%20partly%20built%20of%20monk%20stone%20from%20the%20main%20manor%20owned%20by%20the%20powerful%20Rane-%20family%20from%20Gjorslev%20castle.

%3Cb%3EHistory%20of%20the%20Church%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3EVarpelev%20is%20located%20just%20east%20of%20Tryggev%C3%A6lde%20%C3%85dal%20and%20the%20church%20is%20located%20at%20the%20highest%20point%20in%20the%20town.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0AThe%20church%20was%20built%20with%20a%20nave%20and%20choir%20in%20Romanesque%20times%2C%20in%20the%20years%201080-1175%2C%20and%20already%20at%20the%20end%20of%20this%20period%20had%20the%20tower%20added%2C%20which%20is%20a%20little%20unusual.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0AThe%20church%20was%20originally%20whitewashed%2C%20but%20the%20parish%20council%20did%20not%20want%20to%20maintain%20this%2C%20which%20is%20why%20the%20church%26%2339%3Bs%20various%20additions%20and%20alterations%20are%20clearly%20evident%20from%20its%20external%20appearance.

%3Cb%3ECA%20coating%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3EIn%20the%20nave%20and%20chancel%20you%20can%20see%20the%20ceiling-mounted%20round%20arches%2C%20of%20which%20those%20in%20the%20chancel%20are%20beautifully%20painted.%20Above%20the%20arch%20to%20the%20choir%20is%20a%20painting%20with%20the%20letters%20CA%20surrounded%20by%20a%20royal%20crown%20and%202%20lions%20and%20the%20year%201706.%20CA%20are%20the%20initials%20for%20Queen%20Charlotte%20Amalie%20married%20to%20Chr.%20V.%20The%20queen%20bought%20Gjorslev%20in%201682%20and%20thus%20became%20patron%20of%20Varpelev%20church%2C%20which%20she%20had%20restored.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0ADuring%20the%20survey%20in%201988%2C%20in%20the%20ship%26%2339%3Bs%20triumphal%20wall%20%22a%20large%20designed%20monogram%20with%20a%20royal%20crown%20was%20found%2C%20uncovered%20and%20repaired.%20The%20monogram%20is%20held%20by%20two%20impressive%20lions%2C%20and%20the%20decoration%20is%20provided%20with%20the%20year%201706%22.%20The%20monogram%26%2339%3Bs%20CA%20stands%20for%20Queen%20Charlotte%20Amalie%2C%20the%20church%26%2339%3Bs%20patron%20since%201682.%20The%20year%20apparently%20does%20not%20refer%20to%20any%20of%20her%20own%20anniversaries%2C%20but%20can%20be%20explained%20by%20the%20fact%20that%20the%20queen%20had%20the%20church%20renovated%20and%20decorated%20at%20this%20time%2C%20%22as%20traces%20of%20a%20square%20decoration%20in%20very%20strong%20yellow%20and%20red%20colours%22.%20That%20this%20decoration%20was%20painted%20at%20the%20same%20time%20as%20the%20monogram%20can%20be%20established%20with%20certainty.%20The%20National%20Museum%20writes%20about%20the%20clearly%20drawn%20and%20strongly%20bristly%20claws%20of%20the%20lions%3A%20%22The%20claws%20on%20the%20lion%26%2339%3Bs%20hind%20legs%20are%20painted%20on%20top%20of%20the%20decoration%2C%20while%20space%20has%20been%20given%20in%20its%20design%20for%20the%20bow%20under%20the%20nonogram.

%3Cb%3EThe%20round%20arches%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3EIn%20the%20nave%20and%20chancel%20you%20can%20see%20the%20ceiling-mounted%20round%20arches%2C%20of%20which%20those%20in%20the%20chancel%20are%20beautifully%20painted

%3Cb%3EThe%20altar%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3EThe%20altarpiece%20with%20a%20crucifix%20built%20by%20the%20Deputy%20Woodmaster%20Abel%20Schr%C3%B8der%20in%20the%20early%2016th%20century.%20The%20crucifix%20was%20originally%20hung%20on%20the%20wall%20in%20the%20nave%2C%20but%20was%20found%20in%20the%20ceiling%20of%20the%20church%20in%201923.%20After%20restoration%2C%20this%20was%20replaced%20with%20the%20original%20altarpiece%2C%20which%20now%20forms%20the%20entrance%20to%20the%20interior%20of%20the%20tower.

%3Cb%3EThe%20desk%20chair%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20oak%20writing%20chair%20is%20very%20simple%2C%20probably%20from%20the%2016th%20century%2C%20with%20some%20nailed-on%2C%20somewhat%20unhelpfully%20cut%20sides%20as%20decoration.%3C%2Fp%3E%20%0A%20%0A%3Cp%3E%20The%20concept%20of%20clerk%20as%20such%20originates%20from%20the%20Catholic%20era%20and%20is%20carried%20forward%20in%20the%20church%20after%20the%20Reformation%20in%201536.%20In%20Christian%20the%20Fifth%26%2339%3Bs%20Danish%20law%20of%201683%2C%20it%20is%20stated%20that%20a%20permanent%20clerk%20should%20be%20employed%20in%20every%20pastorate%2C%20and%20it%20is%20emphasized%20that%20he%20must%20be%20a%20student.%20According%20to%20a%20royal%20letter%20in%201736%2C%20schoolmasters%20who%20had%20served%20at%20the%20royal%20schools%20were%20to%20be%20preferred.%20Gradually%2C%20the%20teachers%20contested%20a%20number%20of%20clerkships%2C%20and%20the%20idea%20emerged%20that%20the%20special%20clerkships%20could%20be%20abolished.%20In%20the%201790s%2C%20they%20therefore%20began%20to%20abolish%20the%20offices%20of%20clerks.%20Their%20businesses%20then%20passed%20to%20the%20schoolmasters%20in%20the%20church%20towns.%20The%20teacher%20who%20was%20appointed%20as%20church%20singer%20was%20paid%20specially%20for%20this.%20In%20Str%C3%B8by%20and%20Varpelev%20parishes%2C%20Laurids%20Rebech%20became%20a%20clerk%20at%20the%20age%20of%2044%20in%201777.%2020%20years%20later%2C%20when%20he%20is%20sick%20and%20old%2C%20in%201797%20he%20takes%20on%20student%20Otto%20Lang%20as%20an%20assistant.%20But%20already%20the%20following%20year%20the%20clerk%20dies.%20Next%2C%20it%20was%20decided%20to%20abolish%20the%20office%20of%20dean%20with%20effect%20from%201799.%20Otto%20Lang%20was%20henceforth%20and%20until%20his%20death%20in%201814%20referred%20to%20as%20both%20schoolmaster%20and%20church%20singer.%3C%2Fp%3E%20%0A%20%0A%3Cp%3E%20Since%20the%20abolition%20of%20the%20office%20of%20dean%2C%20the%20chair%20has%20been%20that%20of%20the%20church%20singer%2C%20although%20it%20retained%20its%20original%20name%20in%20the%20vernacular%2C%20and%20its%20place%20in%20the%20church%20for%20almost%20200%20years.%3C%2Fp%3E

%3Cb%3EThe%20baptismal%20font%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20granite%20baptismal%20font%20from%20the%2012th-13th%20centuries%20belongs%20to%20a%20group%20of%2080%20fonts%20that%20are%20not%20decorated%20and%20which%20are%20collectively%20called%20%3Cem%3Ethe%20Roskilde%20type%3C%2Fem%3E%20%2C%20and%20of%20which%20the%20font%20in%20Str%C3%B8by%20is%20a%20variant.%20Due%20to%20the%20wide%20distribution%2C%20there%20were%20probably%20local%20workshops%2C%20but%20the%20group%26%2339%3Bs%20main%20workshop%20must%20have%20been%20in%20the%20diocese%20itself.%3C%2Fp%3E%20%0A%20%0A%3Cp%3E%20At%20the%20top%2C%20the%20basin%20is%20always%20finished%20by%20a%20strong%20rope-twisted%20round%20rod%2C%20which%20usually%20sits%20a%20few%20cm%20below%20the%20rim%2C%20but%20sometimes%2C%20as%20in%20Varpelev%2C%20goes%20up%20to%20the%20rim.%20The%20transition%20between%20basin%20and%20foot%20is%20softened%20with%20a%20strong%20bead%2C%20which%20can%20be%20carved%20in%20one%20with%20the%20foot%20or%2C%20as%20in%20Varpelev%26%2339%3Bs%20case%2C%20with%20the%20basin.%20The%20foot%20of%20this%20type%20of%20font%20is%20a%20truncated%20cone%2C%20in%20Varpelevs%20the%20foot%20is%20of%20masonry%20and%20perhaps%20not%20the%20original%20one.%3C%2Fp%3E%20%0A%20%0A%3Cp%3E%20Naturally%2C%20there%20are%20small%20variations%20within%20the%20Roskilde%20group%2C%20both%20in%20appearance%20and%20quality%2C%20but%20e.g.%20the%20font%20in%20Greve%20and%20Varpelev%20are%20very%20similar.%20Summarizing%20about%20the%2080%20fonts%2C%20it%20is%20said%20that%20they%20are%20different%20in%20quality%2C%20but%20when%20they%20are%20at%20their%20best%20%28and%20this%20includes%20the%20font%20in%20Greve%29%2C%20they%20have%20succeeded%3A%20%22...to%20create%20not%20only%20a%20real%2C%20sometimes%20excellently%20executed%20piece%20of%20craftsmanship%2C%20but%20also%20a%20beautiful%20and%20dignified%20font%20type%20with%20good%20proportions%20between%20the%20individual%20joints%2C%20basin%2C%20bead%20and%20foot%2C%20and%20with%20a%20firm%20and%20closed%20attitude%2C%20which%20is%20precisely%20emphasized%20by%20their%20complete%20lack%20of%20decorative%20decoration%22.%20%3Cem%3EThe%20baptismal%20dish%3C%2Fem%3E%20is%20South%20German%20%22Nuremberg%20work%22%20of%20brass%2C%20driven%20over%20form.%20At%20the%20bottom%2C%20Mary%26%2339%3Bs%20Annunciation%20and%20dogs%20and%20deer%20around%20it.%20On%20the%20brink%20the%20same%20hunting%20motif.%20Factory%20stamp%20RS.%3C%2Fp%3E

%3Cb%3ETower%20entrance%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3EThe%20original%20access%20to%20the%20tower%20is%20not%20known.%20But%20for%20a%20while%20people%20managed%20with%20a%20ladder%20through%20the%20south-east%20corner%20of%20the%20tower%20vault.%20On%20the%20north%20side%20of%20the%20tower%2C%20a%20stairwell%20of%20monks%26%2339%3B%20stone%20with%20a%20round%20chalk%20spindle%20is%20now%20being%20built.%20A%20few%20switches%20above%20the%20door%20rounding%20are%20walled%20in%20with%20a%20knobbly%20flint%20stone.%20The%20single%20flint%20stone%20must%20absolutely%20have%20been%20placed%20with%20intent.%20From%20ancient%20times%2C%20steel%20and%20flint%20were%20used%20to%20start%20fires.%20Superstition%20said%20that%20fire%20scared%20away%20trolls%20and%20witches.%20Therefore%2C%20some%20steel%20or%20flint%20was%20often%20placed%20over%20the%20house%26%2339%3Bs%20entrance%20door%20as%20protection.%20Despite%20the%20fact%20that%20God%26%2339%3Bs%20house%20had%20to%20be%20considered%20a%20safe%20place%2C%20they%20obviously%20still%20wanted%20to%20%22double-proof%22%20themselves.%20For%20over%20500%20years%2C%20the%20stone%20sat%20undisturbed%20in%20its%20place.%20Whether%20it%20has%20been%20able%20to%20protect%20against%20witchcraft%20remains%20to%20be%20seen%3B%20but%20a%20few%20years%20ago%20part%20of%20the%20flint%20tuber%20was%20knocked%20off.%20So%20vandals%20could%20not%20handle%20it.%20And%20yet%20%E2%80%93%20the%20rest%20of%20the%20stone%20is%20fixed%20and%20well%20built%20in%2C%20and%20its%20new%20mussel%20fracture%20stands%20black%20and%20extra%20clear%20against%20the%20red%20stones.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0ADuring%20the%20same%20period%2C%20the%20tower%20gets%20new%20gables.%20Usually%2C%20the%20monk%20stone%20gives%20rise%20to%20the%20construction%20of%20stair%20gables%20and%20a%20multitude%20of%20high%20blinds.%20But%20the%20tower%20here%20is%20built%20with%20a%20smooth%20crest%2C%20pinnacle%20and%20only%203%20high%20apertures.%20The%20triumphal%20gable%20i.e.%20the%20east%20gable%20of%20the%20nave%20is%20provided%20with%20a%20smooth%20crest%20and%20pinnacle%20identical%20to%20the%20end%20of%20the%20tower.

%3Cb%3ETower%20supports%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3EIn%20the%2017th%20century%2C%20the%20tower%26%2339%3Bs%20two%20pillars%20of%20lime%20stone%20and%20with%20two%20sets%20of%20half-roofs%20were%20probably%20built.%20The%20north%20side%20of%20the%20nave%20received%20a%20similar%20but%20lower%20and%20heavier%20buttress.

%3Cb%3EEpiscopal%20stamp%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cem%3EThe%20west%20section%20of%20the%20nave%2C%20the%20north%20wall%3C%2Fem%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0AHere%20is%20the%20church%26%2339%3Bs%20oldest%20decoration%2C%20which%20has%20been%20there%20%22always%22%2C%20i.e.%20from%20the%20construction%20of%20the%20church%3A%20a%20red%20consecration%20cross.%20The%20people%20at%20the%20National%20Museum%20write%3A%20%22In%20the%20original%20part%20of%20the%20church%2C%204%20Romanesque%20consecration%20crosses%20were%20found%2C%20painted%20in%20red%20after%20sketching%20by%20scratching%20with%20a%20fit%20in%20the%20fresh%20plaster%2C%20and%20therefore%20painted%20immediately%20after%20the%20construction%20of%20the%20church...%20The%20cross%20on%20the%20north%20wall%20of%20the%20church%20was%20allowed%20to%20stand%20in%20front%20of%20the%20church%2C%20as%20it%20was%20extremely%20well%20preserved%20...%20There%20were%20probably%20several%20consecration%20crosses%20from%20this%20period%20in%20the%20church%2C%20but%20these%20must%20have%20been%20lost%20in%20connection%20with%20the%20expansion%20of%20windows%20and%20other%20interventions%20in%20the%20building.%20which%20probably%20also%20dates%20from%20this%20period%2C%20as%20it%20was%20painted%20before%20the%20construction%20of%20the%20vaults.%20These%20traces%20of%20color%20were%20covered%20again%22.

%3Cb%3EChalk%20painting%20behind%20crucifix%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cp%3E%3Cem%3EIn%20the%20east%20wall%20of%20the%20choir%3C%2Fem%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0AOn%20the%20east%20wall%20behind%20the%20crucifix%20is%20%E2%80%8B%E2%80%8Ba%20fresco%20of%20flower%20vines.%20It%20was%20executed%20in%201923-1925%2C%20and%20it%20was%20said%20about%20the%20execution%20in%201988%3A%20%22It%20is%20clear%20that%20the%20placement%20of%20the%20cross%2C%20Mary%20and%20John%20has%20been%20taken%20into%20account%20in%20the%20painting.%20Based%20on%20the%20underlying%20traces%20of%20colour%2C%20however%2C%20it%20could%20be%20established%20that%20although%20the%20decoration%20was%20carried%20out%20in%20this%20century%2C%20it%20is%20designed%20on%20the%20basis%20of%20an%20older%2C%20probably%20Late%20Gothic%2C%20painting%22.%3C%2Fp%3E%20%0A%20%0A%3Cp%3E%20In%201964%2C%20the%20priest%20at%20the%20time%20suggested%20that%20the%20wall%20behind%20the%20altar%20be%20plastered%20over%2C%20as%20the%20decorations%20are%20not%20the%20original%20ones%2C%20but%20his%20proposal%20did%20not%20gain%20resonance.%3C%2Fp%3E

%3Cb%3EThe%20altar%20decoration%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Ch3%3EThe%20altar%20decoration%20is%20a%20chancel%20arch%20crucifix%20from%20the%20time%20just%20after%201500.%20In%20the%20Middle%20Ages%2C%20N%C3%A6stved%20was%20the%20center%20of%20a%20large%20artistic%20enterprise%20with%20many%20skilled%20artists.%20One%20of%20these%20is%20called%20Store%20Fugledemesteren%20or%20N%C3%A6stvedmesteren%20after%20a%20crucifix%20he%20had%20made%20in%20the%20church%20in%20Store%20Fuglede%20and%20another%20he%20made%20for%20St.%20Mortens%20Church%20in%20N%C3%A6stved.%20In%20addition%20to%20these%20two%2C%20in%20the%20years%20just%20after%201500%20he%20executed%20a%20number%20of%20smaller%20crucifixes%2C%20and%20one%20of%20these%20was%20for%20Vrapelev%20church.%20Characteristic%20of%20his%20style%20is%20that%20the%20figure%20of%20Christ%20has%20an%20elongated%20figure%20with%20a%20large%20head%20with%20a%20seriously%20suffering%20impression.%20The%20hair%20falls%20in%20two%20rope-like%20corkscrew%20curls%20down%20either%20side%20of%20the%20face.%20The%20loincloth%20fits%20tightly%20with%20the%20folds%20across.%20The%20figure%20hangs%20deep%20in%20the%20arms%20with%20outstretched%20feet.%3C%2Fh3%3E%20%0A%20%0A%3Cp%3E%20At%20the%20beginning%2C%20Christ%20is%20presented%20as%20a%20%3Ci%3Eking%3A%3C%2Fi%3E%20He%20has%20proudly%20raised%20his%20head%20with%20a%20king%26%2339%3Bs%20crown%20and%20stands%20with%20both%20legs%20firmly%20planted%20on%20the%20cross.%20He%20is%20clearly%20the%20ruler%20who%20has%20power%20and%20demands%20obedience.%20In%20the%2013th%20century%2C%20it%20is%20the%20crucified%20%3Ci%3Esavior%3C%2Fi%3E%20who%20is%20depicted%3A%20Jesus%20hangs%20on%20the%20cross%2C%20his%20head%20is%20bowed%20and%20covered%20with%20a%20crown%20of%20thorns.%20The%20feet%20are%20placed%20on%20top%20of%20each%20other%20and%20a%20nail%20driven%20through.%20Here%20the%20savior%20is%20seen%2C%20who%20through%20his%20own%20suffering%20and%20death%20has%20redeemed%20the%20people%20for%20their%20sins.%20The%20cross%20itself%20begins%20to%20take%20on%20an%20independent%20character%2C%20it%20is%20not%20just%20a%20cross%2C%20but%20at%20the%20same%20time%20a%20tree%20of%20life%2C%20sometimes%20directly%20decorated%20with%20leaves%20and%20eventually%20often%20adorned%20with%20depictions%20of%20the%20four%20evangelists%20who%20passed%20on%20the%20words%20of%20Jesus%20and%20thus%20continued%20life.%3C%2Fp%3E%20%0A%20%0A%3Cp%3E%20In%20the%20following%20centuries%2C%20the%20realistic%20representation%20and%20the%20actual%20physical%20pain%2C%20%3Ci%3Ethe%20suffering%2C%3C%2Fi%3E%20become%20more%20and%20more%20emphasised%3A%20the%20head%20is%20completely%20sunk%20down%20on%20the%20shoulder%2C%20the%20body%20is%20thin%20and%20the%20ribs%20stick%20out.%20The%20nail%20sites%20are%20carefully%20marked%20with%20trickling%20drops%20of%20blood.%20It%20is%20neither%20a%20powerful%20king%20nor%20a%20spiritual%20personality%20that%20is%20portrayed%2C%20but%20a%20terrifying%20sight%20of%20poor%20human%20suffering.%20A%20whole%20series%20of%20crucifixes%20from%20the%2015th%20century%20are%20of%20this%20type%20in%20a%20more%20or%20less%20elaborate%20design.%20One%20of%20them%2C%20fortunately%20not%20the%20most%20detailed%2C%20hangs%20in%20Vall%C3%B8by%20Church.%3C%2Fp%3E%20%0A%20%0A%3Cp%3E%20The%20Christianity%20of%20the%2016th%20century%20is%20characterized%20by%20a%20deepening%20of%20the%20religious%20life%20and%20%3Ci%3Ean%20immersion%3C%2Fi%3E%20in%20the%20relationship%20with%20Jesus.%20The%20belief%20was%20that%20if%20one%20imposed%20penance%20and%20deprivation%20on%20oneself%20and%20figuratively%20followed%20in%20the%20footsteps%20of%20Jesus%20while%20he%20was%20human%2C%20then%20perhaps%20one%20could%20also%20follow%20him%20the%20last%20way%20to%20the%20kingdom%20of%20God%20and%20achieve%20salvation.%20The%20Varpelev%20crucifix%20is%20%E2%80%8B%E2%80%8Bfrom%20this%20period%20and%20shows%20precisely%20the%20two%20people%2C%20Mary%20and%20John%2C%20who%20were%20most%20closely%20associated%20with%20Jesus%20and%20followed%20him.%3C%2Fp%3E%20%0A%20%0A%3Cp%3E%20The%20crucifix%20in%20Varpelev%20originally%20hung%20in%20the%20chancel%20arch.%20When%20you%20then%20wanted%20to%20place%20the%20pulpit%20added%20a%20little%20later%20there%2C%20you%20had%20a%20problem.%20The%20crucifix%20was%20probably%20moved%20to%20a%20wall%20in%20the%20church.%20But%20all%20that%20is%20known%20about%20this%20is%20that%20it%20finally%20ended%20up%20in%20the%20attic%20in%20a%20very%20miserable%20condition.%20The%20people%20of%20the%20National%20Museum%20found%20it%20here%20during%20the%20restoration%20of%20the%20church%20in%201923.%20The%20report%20states%3A%20%22On%20the%20ceiling%20of%20the%20vestibule%20lies%20the%20figure%20of%20Christ%20and%20the%20horizontal%20cross%20arm%20lying%20prostrate.%20The%20figure%20is%20missing%20the%20arms%20and%20most%20of%20one%20foot%2C%20but%20is%20otherwise%20well%20preserved...%20Around%20the%20head%20is%20a%20turban-like%20braided%20crown%20of%20thorns...%20The%20loin%20cloth%20is%20wrapped%20narrowly%20and%20short%20around%20the%20hips%3B%20above%20it%20on%20the%20left%20side%20is%20placed%20an%20irregular%2C%20square%20hole%20for%20a%20flap%26%2339%3B.%20The%20arms%20of%20the%20cross%20ended%20horizontally%20in%20the%20relief%20with%20a%20lion%20and%20bull%2C%20the%20symbols%20of%20the%20evangelists%20Mark%20and%20Luke.%20While%20the%20eagle%20above%20symbolizing%20John%2C%20and%20the%20angel%20below%20Matthew%20were%20missing%20at%20that%20time.%3C%2Fp%3E

%3Cb%3EThe%20silver%20wreath%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3EAbove%20the%20writing%20desk%20hangs%20a%20silver%20wreath%2C%20which%20past%20and%20present%20students%20gave%20teacher%20Frelle%20Frellesen%20Skov%20in%201922%20as%20a%20thank%20you%20for%20a%20long%20life%20of%20work.%20In%201944%2C%20the%20widow%20donated%20it%20to%20the%20church%2C%20and%20it%20got%20its%20current%20place.

%3Cb%3EThe%20pulpit%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3EThe%20pulpit%20is%20a%20shoddy%20piece%20of%20work%20dating%20from%20the%20time%20after%201860.%20The%20chancel%20%3Ci%3Earch%3C%2Fi%3E%20between%20nave%20and%20chancel%20is%20pre-hewn%20at%20the%20south-west%20edge%20of%20the%20arch%20due%20to%20an%20earlier%20placement%20of%20the%20pulpit%20in%20the%20choir%20just%20east%20of%20the%20triumphal%20wall.%20It%20got%20its%20current%20location%20in%201988%2C%20when%20it%20was%20restored%20and%20moved%20approx.%20half%20a%20meter%20down%20into%20the%20church%2C%20i.e.%20to%20the%20west.%20At%20the%20same%20time%2C%20%3Ci%3Ethe%20soundscape%2C%3C%2Fi%3E%20which%20was%20on%20the%20ceiling%2C%20was%20set%20up%20again.

%3Cb%3EThe%20chairs%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cp%3EThe%20chairs%20and%20their%20gables%20were%20estimated%20in%201916%20by%20the%20National%20Museum%20to%20correspond%20in%20time%20and%20design%20to%20the%20pulpit.%20During%20the%20restoration%2C%20new%20ones%20are%20acquired%2C%20they%20are%20referred%20to%20as%20being%20from%201923%20and%20%22in%20Gothic%20forms%20of%20Zealand%20character%22.%20With%20this%20vague%20wording%2C%20one%20might%20think%20of%20some%20of%20the%20%22sticks%22%20of%20the%20chair%20ends%2C%20which%20are%20somewhat%20reminiscent%20of%20the%20Gothic%20folding%20patterns%20that%2C%20e.g.%20can%20be%20seen%20on%20the%20entrance%20door%20in%20LI.%20Heddinge%20Church.%20What%20the%20decoration%20is%20supposed%20to%20represent%20or%20symbolize%20is%20unclear.%20A%20single%20chair%20has%20the%20coat%20of%20arms%20of%20the%20Ranes%20family%20in%20the%20gable%20field.%3C%2Fp%3E%20%0A%20%0A%3Cp%3E%20From%20the%20audit%20report%26%2339%3Bs%20accounts%20for%201924%2C%20it%20can%20be%20seen%20that%20a%20painter%20Brun%20and%20an%20artist%20Erik%20Petersen%20each%20provided%20work%20for%20the%20church%20for%20almost%20DKK%201000%20and%20a%20carver%20JP%20Larsen%20for%20almost%20half%20that.%3C%2Fp%3E

%3Cb%3EOle%20Christensen%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0AThe%20tombstone%20is%20%22a%20grey-black%20granite%20stone%2C%20a%20bauta%20on%20a%20plinth%2C%20carved%20with%20an%20oval%20polished%20writing%20surface%20and%20with%20a%20Latin%20cross%20in%20relief%22.%20On%20the%20stone%20is%20written%3A%20Farmer%20Ole%20Christensen%26%2339%3Bs%20Grave%201918.%20Behind%20the%20short%20inscription%20and%20the%20husband%26%2339%3Bs%20name%20his%20wife%2C%20Anne%20Sofie%20Hansen%2C%20who%20is%2014%20years%20his%20junior%2C%20modestly%20hides%20himself%20and%20a%20legacy%20that%20still%20exists.%20The%20lease%20on%20the%20burial%20site%20expired%20in%201962%2C%20but%20the%20parish%20council%20decided%20at%20that%20time%20to%20renew%20the%20lease%20and%20maintain%20it%20at%20the%20church%26%2339%3Bs%20expense.%20About%20the%20grant%20the%20following%3A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0AOle%20Christensen%26%2339%3Bs%20memorial%20legatee%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0AThe%20couple%20owned%20B%C3%B8gelund.%20Two%20years%20after%20the%20husband%26%2339%3Bs%20death%2C%20the%20widow%20draws%20up%20a%20will%20dated%2028%20July%201920%2C%20in%20which%20she%20establishes%20Ole%20Christensen%26%2339%3Bs%20memorial%20legacy%20of%20DKK%2025%2C000.%20The%20legacy%20is%20to%20be%20managed%20by%20the%20parish%20council%20for%20Varpelev%20parish.%20After%20Anne%20Sofie%26%2339%3Bs%20death%2C%20her%20mother%20and%20unmarried%20sister%20must%20receive%20the%20full%20interest%20payment%20of%20the%20endowment%20capital.%20After%20the%20death%20of%20both%2C%20the%20interest%20from%20the%20endowment%20capital%20is%20distributed%20in%20such%20portions%20as%20the%20parish%20council%20deems%20appropriate%20to%20worthy%201.%20needy%20sick%20or%202.%20old%20and%203.%20disadvantaged%20women%20in%20Varpelev%20parish.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%20%0AAnne%20Sofie%20died%20in%201934%2C%20and%20in%201954%20the%20scholarship%20was%20awarded%20for%20the%20first%20time%20Since%20then%2C%20the%20scholarship%20has%20been%20awarded%20every%20year.%20When%20Brugsen%20in%20Varpelev%20was%20closed%20in%201992%2C%20both%20this%20grant%20and%20Niels%20Pedersen%26%2339%3Bs%20grant%20each%20received%20DKK%2050%2C000%20from%20this.%2011996%2C%2014%20people%20received%20a%20sum%20of%20money%20from%20the%20legacy%2C%20which%20should%20really%20be%20referred%20to%20as%3A%20%22Ole%20%3Ci%3Eand%20Anne%20Sofie%3C%2Fi%3E%20Christensen%26%2339%3Bs%20memorial%20legacy%22.

%3Cb%3ESkovrider%20R.%20Hansen%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3EFhv.%20forest%20rider%20at%20H%C3%B8vdingegaard%20R.%20Hansen%26%2339%3Bs%20Family%20Graveyard.%20Skovrideren%20worked%20at%20H%C3%B8vdingeg%C3%A5rd%2C%20an%20estate%20in%20Kallehave.%20As%20a%20pensioner%2C%20he%20bought%20the%20farm%20Eskemose%20in%20Varpelev.%20The%20headstone%20is%20%22made%20of%20gray%20granite%2C%20erected%20in%201950.%20It%20is%20an%20adjusted%20headstone%20with%20a%20relief%20of%20a%20swastika%20in%20a%20rope%20table%20ring.%20It%20is%20a%20typical%20memorial%20with%20local%20history.%20name%22.

%3Cb%3EAne%20Kirstine%20Pedersen%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3EAne%20Kirstine%20Pedersen%20b.%20Nielsen%20%2A16.2.1866%20d2.7.1938%20Rest%20in%20peace.%20The%20stone%20is%20made%20of%20white%20marble%20and%20erected%20in%201938.%20It%20is%20a%20little%20special%20in%20its%20shape%2C%20is%20%22a%20type%20used%20late%22%20and%20has%20a%20%22special%20decoration%20with%20palm%20leaves%2C%20saddle%20and%20profile%20moldings%22.%20The%20couple%20owned%20B%C3%A6k-kemose%20and%20set%20up%20a%20still-existing%20grant%20of%20DKK%2025%2C000%20for%20young%20farmers%26%2339%3B%20training%2C%20which%20is%20now%20distributed%20to%20%22young%20people%20in%20training%22.

%3Cb%3EThe%20sacristy%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3EThe%20sacristy%20is%20undergoing%20renovation%20in%20the%20years%202023-2025.%20As%20the%20level%20of%20the%20outside%20area%20has%20grown%20higher%20than%20the%20indoor%20level%20%2830%20cm%29%20over%20decades%2C%20the%20room%20is%20undergoing%20a%20thorough%20renovation.
